for someone who likes radley balko, this is a bizarre suggestion. if police with the most advanced forensic labs in the world at their fingertips railroad innocent guys, what do you think the neighborhood guys will do?
You are using the deficiencies of the current system to argue against a different system. The justice system sucks up a lot of resources, but its incentives do not lead them to use them well. Furthermore, the issue of paramilitaries vs posses is different from forensics. The guys in body-armor with assault rifles don't moonlight as lab-geeks.

'I would like to see a shift from paramilitarized police towards posses through which the community enforces laws.'

I dunno. Back in the 1970s, Raimondo wrote a radical booklet entitled "In Praise of Outlaws: Rebuilding Gay Liberation." I haven't been able to find a copy, but it comes up in Justin's commentary on Tom Palmer:

Thanks for pointing out the book. I am reminded of Justin Raimondo's defense of "the closet" and mocking of panty-waists like Jamie Kirchick here. I bet Raimondo wouldn't defend such things if he weren't for Paul & against Kirchick, but Kirchick is so deserving of bitch-slapping I can't fault him for it.

I know it's only slightly relevant to the drift your discussion, but I would like to recommend Jack Malebranche's thoughtful discussion of (and rejection of) same-sex marriage in his book "Androphilia." It strikes me as the sort of thing Justin Raimondo might have written had he not become distracted by the whole war thing.

I, too, believe in the ultimately necessary existence of government, but I've thought for a long time that marriage is absolutely unnecessary. It's all about foisting a bogus, state authorized mantle of legitimacy on us, and is yet another example of how far we have left to go in severing the ties between church and state.

Leaving it there, short and sweet (I'm practicing succinctness)...jim

Do you really advocate giving the state the power of life, death, and mutilation over its citizens? Doesn’t sound very libertarian to me.
The State already has that power. If you can think of a way bringing back the old Anglo-Saxon system of justice, I'm all ears. As long as substitutes are prohibited, I do wish for the State to actually provide law and order though.

Auster has actually told me before that the gap between us was too great for there to be any real communication. A while back I was planning on posting a conversation we had that he insisted remain private in which I thought our communication was at an end, but he has still seen fit to post the ocassional message from me.

I recognize that Auster is not a libertarian, nor are most of the people that hang out at his site. I make it a point to read various extremists including people I disagree with greatly. Auster once asked why it was I read his site (I suppose he's more fond of echo chambers), but when I told him he twisted it into a statement about enjoying the "challenge" of arguing with anti-Darwinists! At that time I also e-mailed MM to ask what the hell he saw in Auster, since I certainly haven't observed the intelligence he claims is at that site. Basically, I read Auster for many of the same reasons I read Vox Day, Robert Lindsay and the Odessa Syndicate (though I would also say Vox is wittier than average).

You are approaching Moldbuggian length. Brevity is the soul of blogging.

I can't imagine what you and the people at Auster's site have to say to one another. The POV there is the antithesis of libertarian individualism; every individual preference is supposed to be subsumed to the interests of society and "tradition".
