Sister Y had a conjecture that seemed suitably amenable to the GSS. I remembered P. J. O’Rourke saying something similar, and two anecdotes means data, right? Anyway, I checked it out. I viewed only those who are Male (SEX(1)) and Never Married (MARITAL(5)), because Republicans would be more likely to be married and so have one partner, and have had exclusively female partners (SEXSEX(3)). I ran the analysis for both PARTYID and POLVIEWS. Because the table was too wide to fit, I had to split it into two. I decided that it screws up my stats to include 1 OR MORE, DK # (PARTNERS(9)), which is unlikely to actually represent a greater number than PARTNERS(5-8).

I was surprised that 3 Republican leaning independents broke a hundred. Stronger Republicans are more likely to be able to count their partners while holding a beer.

The GSS does not ask the political views of a person’s partners (which would tough for the higher numbers to answer), so I cannot claim that I’ve conclusively investigated Sister Y’s claim about “liberal” chicks, but I think this is good enough. I suspect also that the desired number of partners is a major factor and may be correlated with some of these variables, so perhaps this post isn’t very helpful for those looking for advice. You should definitely look elsewhere for that.

VERY LATE UPDATE: It has been requested that I control for race to only look at whites. In the GSS that means adding RACE(1) to the selection filter.
